Chris Menconi – Artist

Born and raised in New Orleans, Chris’ early interest in water colors and painting culminated in his decision to major in art at Southeastern Louisiana University. He developed a strong sense appeal for sculpture and ceramics and after graduating in 1986, Chris had devoted his entire career to sculpture. With a lifelong fondness and fascination for animals, he naturally made them subjects for his work. He first began creating colorful jewelry, focusing primarily on animal pins. Although no longer active in jewelry, he gained invaluable experience in the selection and use of colors and the business of his craft.

Chris began sculpting life-sized dogs in clay. They were an immediate success. Each creature has its own unique and humorous personality. They are whimsical although not true caricatures, life-like but not demanding realistic. Even his few growling subjects evoke a smile and admiration rather than fear. The dogs are slab built and painted with washes and stains which impart true colors and textures. Observers often can not resist petting the sculptures anticipating the feel of a hairy coat. Chris is particularly selective in the treatment of the eyes, feeling that the dogs seem to come alive with a personality of their own after they are glazed and fired.
The broad appeal of his art can be measured by the diversity of the celebrities in the arts, entertainment, musical, medical, sports, business, and political fields who own and admire his works.

Chris’ sculptures can be viewed and purchased at the gallery.
